Official UFC 244 Masvidal vs Diaz Discussion Thread Empty Re: Official UFC 244 Masvidal vs Diaz Discussion Thread

Post by mu_shin on Mon Oct 28, 2019 10:41 pm

Just watched the Countdown to Diaz/Mazvidal.

This is a fight I hope most fans will appreciate. When Nate Diaz did such a dominant job against Pettis and called out Masvidal, Joe Rogan was down in the booth saying "Please make this happen", and the UFC responded.

Masvidal's profile obviously improved tremendously after the brilliant flash KO against the mouth that roared, Ben Askren. Self admitted Askren fan for years, but he made a poor choice in opening the Masvidal fight, and paid a heavy price. (Just watched Ben's loss to Maia, and read he's considering retirement.) Jorge is a street fighter from way back, but has worked on all aspects of his game, and has become truly world class dangerous.

This one is a hard call. I believe Masvidal is a much more powerful striker than Pettis, and I don't think Nate will do well to stand and trade the way he's known to do. Jorge also has good cardio endurance, so don't see him fading if it goes late. I think Diaz is likely a more accomplished grappler, but both of these guys prefer to stand and bang, so it looks to me like it depends on who has done better prep and better homework, who can execute their gameplan more effectively on fight night.

Emotionally as a fan, pulling for Nate. Analytically, Masvidal has better power, definitely capable of ending he night on a good shot, where Nate usually relies on a war of attrition, the patented Diaz punches-in-bunches. Guess we'll see, but I think this should be a really good matchup, and give us an entertaining main event.

Agreed, the only difference between the two is literally Masvidal on paper has more power. I think Nate does have power, more than people think, but on paper Masvidal is still more powerful. The grappling Diaz has an advantage over. It's going to be a super good fight, whole card is full of bangers.

Masvidal most definitely has the power advantage, probably the diversified striking advantage as well.....and while Diaz has a huge grappling advantage, I really don't think he's even going to try to grapple, ego and such.....

Thanks Kick.

Also think Till/Gastelum should be good. Till was really on fire until he ran into Woodley. Coming in at 185, looks like he's closer to his natural weight, less drained from cutting, so should be strong. Gastelum has been a perennial top competitor, all around good skills, so I like this one as well.

Yeah, and apparently it's been an ongoing issue for a few weeks. Looks like it's all good, but Till flying in on weigh in day can't be great for him. They also seemed to have Jared Cannonier as stand by, but I read yesterday that Kelvin has no intention of fighting him!

Can't blame Kelvin, opponent changing with 2 or 3 days notice? I'd say no too.

Till visa issues been sorted, he's in New York

Hahahahha, you expect the UFC and commission to actually adhere to their rules! Seriously though, I think there is leeway on stuff like that, think about Anderson Silva stepping in to fight DC at UFC 200, that was on 2 days notice.

As for Gastelum, I agree too, if I was a fighter there is no way I'd take a chance with my career taking a short notice fight with anyone really, certainly not a contender.

Agreed, this is a great card. Lots of good fights and fights with good match ups to see where they are at. I'm looking forward to Burgos/Amirkhani, both good fighters on the rise.

A few thoughts.
What at terrible stoppage in the BMF title fight in what was a very good fight up to that point.
Wonderboy was impressive, looked good, took some shots and engaged much more than normal....love that Wonderboy.
Shabazyan.....WOW what a performance and great head kick KO, the kid has a future.
Corey Anderson look very good too, acted like a douche after the fight though

Really good event ruined by a shitty stoppage. The only comfort was that Masvidal was winning by a large distance anyway, but the finish robbed him of a good finish.

Thought Darren Till looked great against Gastelum, not a great fight but a very disciplined performance by Till to beat Kelvin. How any judge could score the fight 30-27 for Kelvin though......wow. Sidenote, looked the judge up(Dave Tirelli), he also scored Nick Newell as a winner in his fight last week, and he had Deron Winn beating Darren Stewart the week before too. This guy clearly doesn't know what he's watching.

Wonderboy proved he's still a contender at 170. I like Luque a lot and he can still contend, but his style was perfect for Thompson, just kept walking onto every shot Thompson threw.

Derrick Lewis still sucks as a fighter, but he did look improved against Ivanov.

Kevin Lee......man, I thought he killed Gregor Gillespie! That was one sweet as fuck head kick KO.

Corey Anderson answered his critics and got a fantastic win. He should be next for Jon Jones but likely won't be. His post fight antics were douchey as fuck, but hey the guy got a spectacular win and he had a release of energy to answer all the guys who write him off over and over again. I'll let him off for it, especially after the apology he put out almost immediately. Walker will for sure be back but needs to be a little more prepared, but still needs that crazy ass shit too.

Amirkhani would have won that fight of he had any cardio at all. But fair play to Burgos, he looks good and overcame early trouble, and definitely looks a threat at 145.

Shabazyan beat the gatekeeper to the top 10 and he beat him well, he's a contender now.

And Rozenstruik, another exciting KO artist at HW. Heard he's replacing Walt Harris to fight Overeem next month's headliner on ESPN......big step up now.

Crazy eh! Complete madness to get more of a fine for celebrating a win(albeit badly) than actual cheating. If you're a fighter in future, best idea on cutting weight is to cheat, you lose less money than if you miss weight!
